Australian Tawny is a complex blend of young, fresh port with older, softer material. The richness of Shiraz and the softness of Grenache together with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Mataro and other varieties, combine together in the Port Soleras to produce this ‘tawny’ style port.
In 2009 we produced two barrels of port from the varietals Syrah and Mer-lot, and blended them with our own Koenig Distillery grape spirits. The wine was then aged in excess of 44 months in small oak barrels, giving it a smooth, velvety finish to balance the sweetness of the wine and fiery grip from the spirits. The resulting Port-style wine is rich and decadent, and will age up to 10 years in the cellar. Try with chocolate desserts or the classic combination of Stilton cheese, fruits and nuts.
